KIEV, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine celebrated its National Flag Day nationwide on Thursday to honor the integrity and value of the national symbol.
"Blue and yellow flag unites us, makes us stronger. I urge everyone to protect and respect the national sanctuary and to unite under the national flag of Ukraine for a happy future," Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said in his congratulation message released by the presidential press service.
Yanukovych led a flag-raising ceremony on the day near the Presidential Administration. A military parade was held to honor the day here with over 1,000 servicemen participating.
Major buildings across the country have been decorated with flags and yellow-blue ribbons.
The history of the Ukrainian flag is around 100 years old. It was adopted for the first time in 1918 by the Ukrainian People's Republic, but canceled during the former Soviet era. The flag was officially restored in 1992 following Ukraine's independence.
The two colors -- blue and yellow -- symbolize the color of the country's rivers and wheat fields.
