ANKARA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ten Turkish F-16s took off from the 2nd Air Force Command in Diyarbakir province of southeast Turkey and bombarded the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) camps in Iraq's Zap and Khakurk regions on Tuesday, local newspaper Today's Zaman reported on its website Wednesday.
The offensive began on Tuesday afternoon and lasted late into the night, said the report, adding the F-16s targeted camps where PKK leaders Murat Karayilan, Cemil Bayik and Duran Kalkan are thought to be staying.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, took up arms in 1984 in an attempt to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. Since then, over 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the group.
