Pakistani doctors remove dead foetus from baby's body

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- A local hospital in Pakistan's capital Islamabad on Saturday successfully removed a foetus from a nearly two-and-half-month old girl, reported local media Saama.

The baby, Amna, was admitted to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) after parents found that she had complained to them about a stomach pain.

Doctors with PIMS suggested an operation after checking Amna, a resident of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, as she was suffering from severe stomach pain.

Dr Zaheer Abbasi, who was among the team of the surgeons who carried out the operation on the baby, told reporters that a complete skeleton of human baby was removed from her stomach.

The baby is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of PIMS and doctors are hopeful of her recovery.

Doctor said such a rare case occurred because of some complications during the growth of the child in her mother's belly.

In March 2006, surgeons in PIMS operated on a 2-month-old Pakistani girl to remove two fetuses from her body.

In medical history, there have been many such known cases of foetuses developing in babies. In 2003, Kazakhstan doctors removed a foetus from a seven-year-old boy.
