KOLKATA, India, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tension prevailed on the Indo-Bangladesh border on India's eastern state of West Bengal Sunday as a para-military soldier went missing, police said.

The soldier, identified as S. Venkatesh, belonging to India's Border Security Force (BSF), was on duty on the border with Bangladesh at Kaliachak in Malda district, 274 km from the state capital.

His comrades found he missing on Sunday morning and immediately alerted their senior officers.

Senior BSF officers meet their counterparts in Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) to trace the soldier as they suspected it might be the handiwork of cattle smugglers.

Each year big herds of cattle are allegedly smuggled from India to Bangladesh, especially before the Muslim festival of Eid that falls on Aug. 19 for the holy slaughter.
