Bolivian ruling party backs Morales' re-election

LA PAZ, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Bolivian ruling party said on Thursday that it was backing a third consecutive term of President Evo Morales.

"We proclaim Evo Morales presidential candidate of Bolivia for 2014," Concepcion Ortiz, vice president of the Movement for Socialism (MAS), said in a resolution following a party assembly meeting.

The document did not mention the proposed re-election of Vice President Alvaro Garcia, who has been Morales' running mate in the last two elections in December 2005 and in December 2009. Both also triumphed in a referendum vote in 2008.

While Morales has said he is not seeking a third term, he indicated that the nation's new constitution allows him to run again.

At the closing ceremony of the party assembly, Morales said with the support of the Bolivian people, "the process of change must be taken up again."

On Thursday, the ruling party declared itself under "a state of emergency" due to attempts to destabilize the government, and called for the expulsion of non-governmental organizations that receive funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development.
