Gun men shot dead district governor in Afghan town, Taliban claim responsibility

MAIDAN SHAHAR, Afghanistan, July 29 (Xinhua)-- Unidentified gun men shot dead the district governor of Chak district in Wardak province 35 km west of capital city Kabul on Sunday, a local official said.

"The governor of Chack district, Mohammad Ismael Wafa was on way to office this morning when unidentified armed men opened fire on his vehicle killing him on the spot and injuring his son," spokesman for provincial administration Shahidullah Shahid told Xinhua.

Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in talks with media via telephone from unknown location claimed of responsibility for the attack, saying Taliban fighters carried out the attack.

The armed outfit which launched spring offensive in May 3 this year, has said anyone working for government and the NATO-led troops are legitimate target.
