DAMASCUS, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian Foreign Ministry announced Monday that the Moroccan ambassador to Syria is persona non grata.
In a statement issued Monday, the ministry said that Mohammad Ikhsasi is persona non grata in Syria as of July 16.
It said the decision came in response to a similar move by Morocco, which expelled the Syrian ambassador the same day.
Several countries have pulled out their diplomatic representatives from Syria and also expelled Syrian diplomatic missions on their soils as well.
In retaliation to such moves, Syria expelled a number of foreign ambassadors.
The diplomatic cutoff by Arab and western countries came to protest against the Syrian administration's crackdown on opposition activists.
