KATHMANDU, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Nepal Army on Wednesday started the process of selecting Unified Communist Party of Nepal- Maoists (UCPN-M) People's Liberation Army's (PLA) combatants for integration, marking an important step in the peace process, local media reported on Thursday.
According to Nepal Army Spokesperson, Brigadier General Ramindra Chhetri, the army's selection committee has commenced the registration of applications from the former UCPN-Maoist combatants.
UCPN-Maoist army commanders from different cantonments was quoted by Republica daily as saying that the process has started in all the cantonments.
UCPN-M's People's Liberation Army was the military strength of the party when the party was at war against the state.
Altogether 3,123 combatants have opted for integration into the national army. They will be accommodated under a new directorate to be formed under the Nepal Army. The government, however, is yet to finalize the structure of the directorate.
