HANOI, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The deputy foreign ministers of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand will meet on May 18 in Vietnam's central Quang Tri province, about 480 km south of Vietnamese capital Hanoi, to promote cooperation along the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), reported Vietnam News Agency on Thursday.
To prepare for the conference, the three countries' Senior Official Meeting (SOM) was held Thursday, chaired by the head of SOM Vietnam, Nguyen Quoc Dung, and with participation of the two heads of SOM Laos, Phane Savanphet, and SOM Thailand, Anuson Chinvanno, together with other representatives from the three countries.
SOM participants reviewed preparations for the EWEC conference and its working agenda, including content of the would-be joint communiqu.
They also discussed on infrastructure development and legal framework to promote cooperation along the corridor, making it from a transport route into a potential economic belt.
The East-West Economic Corridor is an economic development program initiated in 1998 by the Ministerial Conference of the Greater Mekong Sub-region organized in Manila, the Philippines, in order to promote development and integration of four countries, namely: Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. This corridor became operational on Dec. 12, 2006.
