TUNIS, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Former Libyan Prime Minister Baghdadi Ali Mahmoudi, now imprisoned in Tunisia, confirmed Thursday that former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had funded French President Nicolas Sarkozy's 2007 presidential campaign, Tunisian media reported Friday.
Earlier, French media reported about a document indicating that Gaddafi funded Sarkozy's 2007 election campaign with 50 million euros (about 66 million U.S. dollars). But the incumbent French president then said the document was false, adding the information was "grotesque" and "outrageous."
However, Mahmoudi, who is waiting for an extradition order from Libyan authorities, confirmed the authenticity of the document in a statement read by his lawyer, according to Tunisia Numerique news website.
"I confirm that there exists a document signed by Moussa Koussa and that Sarkozy received the money," said the statement.
Moussa Koussa was the former head of Gaddafi's security services. He resigned in 2009 and fled to Tunisia and later to London.
