ROME, April 13 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale hit southern Italy on Friday, according to state television Rai.

The TV report said schools in Palermo, the capital city of Sicily island in southern Italy, were evacuated, and many people took to the streets.

Rome-based National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the quake hypocenter was located at 30 km off the coast between Palermo and Ustica (a small island 70 km north of Palermo), at a depth of about 15 km.

Aftershocks were also detected, but no significant damage or injury was reported.
