JAKARTA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics agency (BMKG) revised down the biggest aftershock in Aceh earthquake from the initial 8.8 to 8.1 magnitude, local news portal website detik.com reported.

The agency said the latest quake scale was determined after it conducted further calculation. The strong aftershock, which occurred at 17:43 p.m. local time is located in 483 km west side of Simeulue isles in Aceh with its epicenter 10 km under sea surface.

The aftershock was felt in Bengkulum Lampung, Aceh, West Sumatra and North Sumatra provinces.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the strongest aftershock in Aceh was at 8.2 magnitude, the news portal reported.

TV footages showed people ran panic on the street in Aceh capital of Banda Aceh, and took refuge in the largest mosque in the city, Baiturrahman and in a shelter particularly built by government and foreign assistance to accommodate tsunami evacuation.

Tsunami evacuation drills had been conducted by people in Aceh several times in anticipating possible tsunami in the province that is prone to the disaster.

Signs of tsunami have already reportedly seen in parts of Aceh coasts.

Aceh was hit by a severe tsunami in December 2004 that claimed hundreds of thousand lives as the tsunami occurred 50 kilometers away from the coast.
