Strong earthquake in Sumatra slightly felt in Yangon   2012-04-11 17:42:53            

YAGNON, April 11 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, which jolted off the west coast of northern Sumatra at 08:38:30 GMT on Wednesday, was felt in Yangon.

Myanmar's Mandalay, Sittway, Kyaukphyu, Laputta, Chaungtha, Pyapon also felt the quake, said the Meteorology and Hydrology Department (MHD).

The MHD is closely monitoring the quake effect on Myanmar.

According to U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter, with a depth of 33.00 km, was initially determined to be 434 km southwest of Banda Aceh in northernmost Sumatra, Indonesia.
