TOKYO, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Emperor Akihito was discharged from the University of Tokyo Hospital Sunday after undergoing heart bypass surgery in February, the Imperial Household Agency said.

The 78-year-old emperor went through a surgery for angina on Feb. 18, and then experienced cardiac rehabilitation programs.

His doctors suggested that the emperor take a rest of one week or so before carrying out official duties.

Akihito, who ascended the throne in 1989, underwent treatment for prostate cancer in 2003. He was hospitalized for more than two weeks for bronchial pneumonia last November.
