BEIJING, Aug.7 (Xinhuanet) -- BMX racing is a global sport, and especially in Europe and South America, its popularity has exploded. So what exactly is BMX racing all about?

BMX is short for bicycle motocross, a bike with 20 inch wheels, a single gear and a rear brake only. It’s a new Olympic event and made it debut at the 2008 Beijing Games.

The BMX racing is pretty straightforward—Just try your best to be the fastest around the course. In Olympics, eight riders will compete in each heat of the races, riding one lap on a dirt track usually around 370 meters long. A good rider can take only about thirty seconds to get it through.

In the initial time trail heat, 32 male riders and 16 female riders will race the course against only the clock. The result will decide what seeding they will take in the first stage.

Then they will go through the quarter final where the top four finishers in each heat can move up to the next level, until the dust settles.

What bring the charm to this sport is the track that feature rollers, berms and jumps before the finish line. Riders start from a high drop which provide the majority of the speed required. The track will include three turns in between. Some features rider can experience including : The Step-up , the step-down, the double, the rhythm section and table top.
