Rescue and relief operations continue in Pakistan

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Rescue and relief efforts in Pakistan continue to reach cold and hungry survivors of Monday's powerful earthquake.

The epicenter of the magnitude-7.5 quake was near the mountainous Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, along the border with Pakistan. The death toll in Pakistan has climbed to 272, with over 2,000 injured.

Some 25,000 houses have been damaged. Pakistan's army and civil rescue departments launched operations soon after the earthquake. At least 35,000 tents and 25 tons of medicine have been distributed to all affected areas so far. And the army has installed 49 water filtration plants around the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
