BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- According to WHO's cancer agency, processed meats such as ham and sausage can lead to colon and other cancers. Red meat, according to the agency, is probably cancer-causing as well.
The France-based International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, part of the WHO, put processed meat such as hot dogs and ham on its Group 1 list. This group already includes tobacco, asbestos and diesel fumes, for which there is "sufficient evidence" of cancer links.
However, in a statement, the agency also says the risk of developing colo-rectal cancer from consuming processed meat remains small, but increases with the amount of meat consumed.
Researchers released an evaluation of more than 8-hundred studies from several continents on meat and cancer. Their evaluation classified processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans" - in the same category as cigarettes - and red meat as "probably carcinogenic to humans."
