BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Saudi Arabia's foreign minister says there is no role for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the future of the country. After a meeting in the Egyptian capital, Adel al-Jubeir said international talks to find a solution to the Syrian conflict had yielded some progress, but that more work needed to be done.
"I believe that there has been some progress and positions have moved closer on finding a solution to the Syrian crisis, but I cannot say that we have reached an agreement. We still need more consultations and negotiations to reach this point," Bashar al-Assad said.
The foreign minister stressed Assad must be removed from power to eliminate the militant Islamic State. Adel Al-Jubeir also said there are international negotiations on how to apply the principles of the first Geneva peace conference on Syria. He said this involves the formation of a transitional body that will form a new constitution, govern civil and military institutions, and prepare for new elections in the war-torn country.
