English.news.cn   2015-10-26 13:58:02

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia's Foreign Ministry says Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have discussed the Syria crisis during a phone conversation. They talked about prospects for a political resolution between Syrian authorities and the opposition, supported by the international community.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had said the elimination of terrorist groups will lead to a political solution. His comments came during talks with a Russian parliamentary delegation visiting Damascus just days after Assad went to Moscow for talks with President Vladimir Putin.

A Russian lawmaker said Assad had told the delegation he was willing to hold new parliamentary and presidential elections and would run again as president. Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it was time to start preparing for elections in Syria. A Russian lawmaker who met President Assad talked about the Syrian leader's priorities.

"The first aim is the struggle or victory over terrorism. And after that the elections...parliamentary or presidential elections. But first of all we must do, reach peaceful, peace on Syrian land," Lavrov said.
