BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 100 people have been injured in a ferry accident near Hong Kong. The ferry's operator said the vessel was sailing at high speed and collided into an 'unidentified object'.
The ferry was returning from Macau late on Sunday night, carrying 163 passengers and 11 crew members, when it slammed into an object off the Soko Islands.
Authorities received calls of a power outage on board. Local media reported a large rescue operation had been mounted involving air services, marine police and the fire department. Passengers and crew were rushed to several hospitals in Hong Kong.
The safety of Hong Kong's waters was called into question after a fatal collision between two vessels in 2012, in which 39 people were killed. It was the city's worst maritime disaster for over 40 years.
