BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- A gathering commemorating the 70th anniversary of the recovery of sovereignty over Taiwan from 50 years of Japanese occupation was held at the Great Hall of the People on Friday.
Chinese top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng addressed the commemoration ceremony. Yu said that it was the holy mission of all Chinese to safeguard the national sovereignty and territorial integrity and ensure that Taiwan's status as a part of China's territory is not changed.
Meanwhile, an exhibition about the history of people in Taiwan resisting Japanese aggression opened Friday in the Chinese People's Anti-Japanese War Museum. WWII veterans and representatives from Taiwan attended the opening ceremony.
In 1895, when China was defeated in the first Sino-Japanese War, the Qing government was forced to sign the unequal Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding Taiwan and its affiliated islands to Japan. China recovered territory occupied by Japan, including Taiwan, at the end of World War II.
