BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Stephen Perry, as we just mentioned, is the chairman of the 48 Group Club, a business network committed to promoting links with China. Its history goes back to the 1950s, when the founding "icebreakers" broke the West's Trade Embargo Policy against China and embarked on a journey of trade between the two countries.
In 1953, just four years after the People's Republic of China was founded, most Western countries were still imposing a trade embargo on China. Stephen's father Jack Perry, who was chairman of the London Export Corporation, along with a few insightful men in the industry, visited China at the invitation of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, or CCPIT. Their delegation was later known as "icebreakers" since they broke through the iced-up trade between the West and China.
The following year saw Jack Perry and 48 British companies attempting to develop trade with China through the formation of The 48 Group, which later became known as the 48 Group Club in the early 90s.
Ever since 1967, Stephen has been helping his father in trade with China and has also offered consultancy services to British companies entering China's markets.
Stephen himself has been to China more than 200 times, and has witnessed the evolution of society. He has inherited his father's spirit as an icebreaker, continuing to promote Sino-British trade relations.
