Syrian president makes a surprise visit to Moscow

English.news.cn   2015-10-21 20:29:05

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has made a surprise visit to Russia. A Kremlin spokesman says Assad arrived in Moscow for talks with his strongest ally President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday evening.

The spokesman did not say whether the Syrian leader is still in Moscow or has returned home. Syria's presidential office says Assad has returned to Damascus. The Kremlin said in a statement that Assad thanked Putin for his support in helping fight Islamist militants in Syria.

The two leaders also discussed the continuation of Russian airstrikes in Syria that began three weeks ago. It is believed to be Assad's first foreign visit since Syria's civil war broke out in 2011.
