BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Elderly residents in Wuhan are benefitting from an innovative home-care introduced this year by the government to help them order personalized services.
Early in the morning, the Elderly Home Care Service Center in Jinquan Residential Community in Wuhan’s Hongshan District receives a phone call from Wang Dongsheng who is 65 years old.
He cannot walk due to a stroke and poliomyelitis disease. And he wants to buy some items. So he called the home-care service center for help. In only half an hour, all the goods Mr. Wang ordered have been delivered to his apartment.
"I’m handicapped, I receive subsidies from the government every month. But it is not convenient for me to go out. Now I can use my subsidies to buy things and use the delivery service. It is really good for me," said Wang Dongsheng said.
79-year-old Zhu Zaimei also benefits from the new measure. She suffers from a leg disease. She usually orders the home medical care services, with family doctor’s treatment and massage, she feels better.
"I have bone problems and high blood pressure. Even to get to the nearest hospital, I still have to take a taxi to go there. So it is tough for me to see a doctor. Now I only need to make a phone call, then the doctor will come to see me," Zhu said.
The population of over 65s in Wuhan has now surpassed one million. From 2006, Wuhan’s government has provided one-hour free housekeeping every day for the city’s handicapped, low-income and childless elderly residents. But the service has been criticized for being too simple and inflexible.
To solve the problems, an innovative measure was introduced this year to promote services, including meal delivery and medical care.
