Syria: Gov't troops make gains in nation's east, north

English.news.cn   2015-10-18 21:24:09

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Syrian state television says government troops have regained control of an area in the east of country, and made advances in retaking territory in the north.

The Syrian army regained control of al-Jafra area on Saturday. It's considered the first line of defense for the Deir al-Zor airport. The self-proclaimed Islamic State controls most of the eastern province surrounding the airport. The gain came after air strikes by government warplanes in cooperation with Russian air strikes.

Also on Saturday, Syrian troops backed by Hezbollah and Iranian fighters also reportedly made advances in their offensive to retake territory around the northern city of Aleppo. Troops are also reportedly trying to advance to the east of Aleppo, towards Kweires military airport. The goal is to break a siege on the base by Islamic State and other insurgents.
