BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Syrian government troops have opened a new front Friday, launching ground offensive against rebels around the northwestern city of Aleppo. The joint command for the operation said the army had begun operations on the western and southern outskirts of the city.
According to the US, up to 2,000 Iranian and Iran-backed forces were aiding the offensive. Control of Aleppo city has been divided between President Bashar al-Assad's government and rebels since mid-2012.
The Aleppo offensive is the fourth that the government has launched since Moscow began an air campaign on September 30th.
