BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party has scrapped Hung Hsiu-Chu as its candidate for the leadership of Taiwan. The party voted overwhelmingly for the decision at a special temporary congress Saturday. Senior party members had urged Hung Hsiu-chu to quit the race because of her sagging poll numbers.
Addressing the congress, she left the decision on whether she should step aside to the party's representatives. KMT chairman Eric Chu is expected to be named the new candidate for the January election.
Hung Hsiu-chu was nominated in July as the KMT's candidate for the Taiwan leadership election. But her campaign has been riddled with gaffes and opinion polls have put her trailing far behind the Democratic Progressive Party's candidate, Tsai Ing-wen. Polls also indicate that the KMT will fare poorly in local legislative elections, which will also be held in January.
