BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Syrian troops, backed by Russian jets, have reportedly attacked extremists south of Aleppo city in northern Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says there were heavy clashes earlier Friday near the Jebel Azzan region.
The targeted area was close to a main road heading south towards the capital Damascus. The attack comes as the Syrian army expands a counter-offensive with the support of Russia's two-week-old air campaign.
And Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that there has been some progress in fighting Islamic State militants in Syria. He also said Russia has reached out to Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan and Israel to discuss cooperation in tackling terrorism.
