BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Since its foundation in 2003, the Beijing International Art Biennale has showcased contemporary paintings and sculpture. This year, more than 200 artists were in attendance from all over the world.
Reflecting the 70th-Anniversary year of World-War-Two's conclusion, the Sixth Beijing International Art Biennale was themed this year around 'Memories and Dreams'.
The exhibition mostly comprised painting and sculpture, with foreign artists from 96 countries contributing about three-quarters of the artwork on display.
"The artworks focus on the power of people and justice during the World Anti-Fascist War. They express it through abstract, realistic, or decorative ways," said Liu Dawei, Curator of Beijing Int'l Art Biennale.
The works include "Long Night" by Chinese painter Guo Runwen, as well as 'Ghetto Child', a bronze sculpture by Australian artist Anastasia Contoguris.
"The sculpture is about a child living in a Jewish ghetto in Warsaw, Poland, during World War Two. The mark on his clothes is also a mark of war. It expresses the dream for peace," said Wang Yong, Beijing Int'l Art Biennale.
Among China's top cultural events since its inception, the biennale is held at the National Art Museum of China. This year, it showcased contemporary art from Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Southeast Asia, Armenia, and South Africa.
