BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Retired Japanese political heavyweight Yohei Kono has slammed the threat by the Japanese government to cut funding for UNESCO, calling the announcement shameful.
His remarks came after Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Japan may halt funding for the UN heritage body's funding, over its inclusion of the Nanjing Massacre on its world memory registration program.
Kono says the massacre is a fact that has been confirmed both in Japan and China, adding that any move to prevent its listing should be rejected. He says it would be shameful if Japan cut its funding because of some domestic opinions.
He also slammed the recent passage of the controversial security bills by the parliament, saying the move will harm Japan's security and the country's ties with China and South Korea.
