BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia's Defense Ministry said Thursday that Islamic State militants have begun to retreat after more than two weeks of its airstrikes in the country.
The statement said Russian aircraft stationed in Syria made 33 sorties against 32 Islamic State facilities in the past 24 hours. Russian airstrikes destroyed an Islamic State command post in Aleppo and an explosive warehouse in Idlib.
Syrian state television, quoting a military source, said the army had begun operations in rebel-held towns north of the city of Homs Thursday.
Syrian troops aim to recapture rebel-held land in Hama, Idlib and Latakia provinces in the northwest. Meanwhile, the Syrian military source said the army and its allies had taken control of two villages between Homs and Teir Malla.
