BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Australian actress Cate Blanchett is lending her voice to the Hollywood chorus calling for equal rights for women. This follows revelation that Academy-Award winner Jennifer Lawrence was paid less than her male co-stars for the film 'American Hustle'. Blanchett was at the London Film Festival for the premiere of her new movie "Carol".
The London Film Festival is speaking up for women's rights. It was a hot topic for the opening movie, 'Suffragette', and now Cate Blanchett has turned up the heat. For her, earnings disparity should have been dealt with long ago.
"It's boring, boring, boring. Let's just get on with it. And, it's not just the film industry, it's across all industries. I mean, equal pay for equal work," Cate Blanchett said.
Rooney Mara, Blanchett's "Carol" co-star, adds that the Hollywood gender pay divide is disappointing.
"I think any sort of gender divide is crazy to be talking about today," Rooney Mara said.
Based on Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel "The Price of Salt", and directed by Todd Haynes, "Carol" tells the tale of an illicit love between two women in 1950s New York.
Chemistry between Mara and Blanchett is essential for the film to work, and luckily both actresses clicked instantly.
"It was easy, we didn't over talk it, we just got on with it. It was amazing," Cate Blanchett said.
"Yeah, it was amazing. I mean I hadn't worked with other females in any real way in years and years and years, so to get to work with Cate this closely and Sarah Paulson, who is brilliant and who is in the film, was really such a joy," Rooney Mara said.
"Carol" made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where Blanchett and Mara were jointly awarded the Best-Actress prize.
And there's been Oscar buzz surrounding the pair ever since.
"I think it's a bit hubristic of me to even think about that," Cate Blanchett said.
"I don't think of it in that way. The thing I'm excited about is that, if that happens, more people will see the movie and that's all you can really ask for," Rooney Mara said.
"Carol" is released in the U.K. on Nov. 27 and in the U.S. on Dec. 18.
