BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- The US, India and Japan are holding naval exercises in India's southern Chennai city, aiming at deepening military ties in the Indian Ocean.

Called Malabar, the drills started on Wednesday, and will last for six days. The US has brought the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, India has provided a submarine along with surface ships and maritime surveillance aircraft, and Japan has brought a destroyer.

The first two days of the exercises were held inside the harbor, and included interactions among the crews of ships. The following days will see anti-submarine warfare and air defence exercises, as well as practice search and rescue operations.

India and the US have been conducting the Malabar exercise since 1992. Japanese troops were involved three times before. But from this year, the country will participate in the event as a formal partner.
