BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Two new lighthouses have gone into operation on Huayang Reef of China's Nansha Islands, in the South China Sea.
The Huayang and Chigua lighthouses are the first civil aids to navigation in the Nansha waters. They will provide route guidance, safety information, emergency rescue and other public services to passing vessels. Construction began on May 26th.
The concrete structures have a light range of 22 nautical miles and a glowing cycle of 8 seconds. The South China Sea is one of the most important maritime lanes for international trade. Over half of global trade goods, a third of global crude oil, and over half of global natural gas pass through the waters.
