BEIJING, Oct.10 (Xinhuanet) --Shanghai lifted taxi fares Thursday, this could be the prelude to an overhaul of the city's century-old-taxi-industry.
Shanghai taxis have hiked their starting fares to 14 yuan from 13 yuan for the first three kilometres, while scrapping the 1 yuan fuel surcharge. All extra revenue would go to the drivers to make up the rising cost of insurance. Shanghai's transportation authority said there will be more reforms to differentiate traditional taxis and car-hailing services.
The fare increase came on the same day as Didi Kuaidi obtained a license to operate legally in Shanghai, raising fears that the traditional taxi industry would face even stronger competition.
