Belarusian journalist Svetlana Alexievich wins the Nobel Prize for Literature

 BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- It's a week of prize giving, and the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature has just been announced. Belarusian author Svetlana Alexievich has been awarded the prestigious prize and 8 million US dollars.

The Swedish Academy said she won for her "polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time".

67-year-old Alexievich has drawn international acclaim with her emotional accounts of the Chernobyl disaster and World War II based on witness accounts.

Chronicling such horrors in the first person through the words of witnesses, Alexievich has seen her works translated into numerous languages and scooped international awards.

Literature was the fourth of this year's Nobel prizes. The prize is named after dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel and has been awarded since 1901 for achievements in science, literature and peace in accordance with his will.
