Britain urges EU to speed up migrant deportation

English.news.cn   2015-10-08 19:48:15

BEIJING, Oct.8 (Xinhuanet) -- The British government is urging the European Union to speed up the deportation of people who do not qualify for asylum. The call from British Home Secretary, Theresa May, comes ahead of a meeting of EU interior ministers in Luxembourg.

"At this meeting today we will move on from internal discussions about relocation and we will move on to discussing how we can solve the causes of this crisis," she said.

"We need to ensure that we break the link between people making a dangerous journey to Europe and being able to stay in Europe. That's why the UK has always argued that we should be sending economic migrants back to their countries of origin, it's why we need to crack down on those who are abusing our asylum system."

"The UK has a good record in this area, but on returns we need to see Europe upping its game and we stand ready to support that."
