BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- The Syrian army and its allies have carried out ground attacks on insurgent positions in Syria backed by Russian air strikes, in their first major coordinated assault since Moscow intervened. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said air strikes hit the western provinces of Hama and Idlib.
And ground attacks targeted at least four insurgent positions in the area, with heavy clashes on the ground. Russia insisted they are mainly focused on the hardline militants, but the West said the Russian campaign was aimed at shoring up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, rather than combating hardliners.
