BEIJING, Oct. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Three scientists from China, Ireland and Japan won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for discoveries that have helped doctors fight malaria and infections caused by roundworm parasites.
Tu Youyou of China, William Campbell of Ireland, and Satoshi Omura of Japan jointly won the prize for their work against parasitic diseases. The Nobel Committee says Campbell and Omura were honored for their discoveries involving a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites. Tu was honored for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against malaria.
The medicine award was the first Nobel Prize to be announced. The winners of the physics, chemistry and peace prizes are set to be announced later this week. The economics prize will be announced next Sunday. No date has been yet set for the literature prize but it is expected to be announced on Thursday.
