BEIJING, Oct. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Initial results and exit polls show Portugal's ruling centre-right coalition won the country's general election on Sunday. It still may not be enough to hold on to its absolute majority in parliament.
With 99.1 percent of parishes in the country counted, the ruling coalition had around 38.5 percent of the vote. Socialist challenger Antonio Costa had 32.4 percent. The final count will not be available until late on Monday.
Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho would be the first leader in Europe to be re-elected after imposing austerity hardships on voters under international bailout packages that started in 2009. The voters are calling for stable economic development, instead of reforms.
"I think we don't need the change. What we need is some continuous measures to maintain the stability for the country," said a voter.
