US & Russia discuss air safety in Syria

English.news.cn   2015-10-02 14:43:30

BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- The Pentagon has held talks with Moscow officials, in a bid to avoid mishaps in Syria between the two military powers. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said topics discussed included pilot distress radio frequencies, and what language aircrews should communicate with each other in.

The talks, held by video conference today, came a day after Russian fighter jets began airstrikes in western Syria. US military officials reacted furiously on Wednesday after Russia gave them only an hour's notice of the bombing campaign. The warning didn't specify when or where the strikes would occur, only saying that coalition planes should avoid the area. Russia's defence ministry says it has damaged or destroyed 12 targets in Syria belonging to the Islamic State group. But a U.S. military spokesman in Iraq says he has no indication that the Russians hit any Islamic State targets.
