Giorgio Armani launches first ever book, telling life and career

BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Having provided the curtain closer at Milan Fashion Week on Monday, Giorgio Armani launched a book that looks back on his life.

Armani, one of the founders of the Milan ready-to-wear scene, celebrates 40 years of his fashion house this year. The 81-year-old designer wrote the book, he says, because he has "memories and sensations" he needs to get out.

But it's not so much a memoir as a photoalbum with annotation.

"An autobiography involves people that are close to you, and you don't always feel authorized to expose them," Armani said.

The book comprises more than 400 pictures, many of them previously unpublished.

Vogue international editor Suzy Menkes was at the launch.

"When I read the book, I realized it's very personal a lot of what he's written. It isn't just a book saying, 'and that was the first time that I met a Hollywood film star'. It's far deeper than that, so I think it's very interesting," Menkes said.

Armani's long-time friend Sofia Loren sat in the front row both for his runway show and the book presentation.

The hefty volume is being published this week by Italian publishing house Rizzoli in both English and Italian.
