BEIJING, Oct.1 (Xinhuanet) -- Afghan officials say they have regained control of key areas of the northern city of Kunduz from the Taliban. They say an operation launched overnight saw forces recapture government landmarks and inflict heavy casualties on the militants.
A Taliban spokesman denied the government had retaken Kunduz. And he said insurgent fighters were still resisting government forces in the centre and controlled most of the rest of the city.
Afghan forces, backed by US air strikes, have been struggling for two days to retake Kunduz. It's the first provincial capital to fall to the Taliban since 2001.
