BEIJING, Oct.1 (Xinhuanet) -- At the WTA Wuhan Open, Venus Williams was taking on Julia Goerges of Germany in the second round. The 35-year-old Venus has seven grand slams to her illustrious name and a win would mark a major milestone as her 700th career victory.
And the American would take the first set 6-4 and after a similar second set, she now has match point against the German. The two big hitters would go toe to toe from the baseline pounding heavy strokes with neither able to find an opening. Finally Goerges sends it long and Venus gets her 700th win in straight sets to advance to the third round.
Romanian cruises to dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory
Meanwhile, the top seed Simona Halep is on court against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia and facing a break point. But the Romanian gets out of trouble with a forehand to the corner then goes on to take the set 6-2.
On match point, Halep just catches the line with an ace down the tee to wrap up an absolute beating, 6-1 in the frame losing only three games in an easy win.
Czech slugger will face Vinci in third round
And the defending champion from last year's inaugural tournament, Petra Kvitova faced a stiff challenge from Daria Gavrilova of Russia, but flicks a winner here and later takes the first set 6-3.
But Gavrilova fights back in the second and this sharp forehand winner breaks Kivitova to win the set 6-4 and the pumped up 21-year-old literally bounces back to her chair.
The decider would be tight, but Kvitova now has match point after a late break and the Russian sends her return just wide, so the champ manages to squeak out a tough win and will face US Open runner-up Roberta Vinci next.
