BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Hungarian police say a new record of over ten thousand asylum seekers entered the country on Wednesday, mostly via Croatia, and hoping to reach northern Europe.
Police said 9,939 people entered from Croatia. 102 crossed from Serbia. The previous record was set on September 14, when nearly 9,400 refugees crossed just before Hungary effectively sealed its border with Serbia.
The closure of Hungary's border with Serbia last week led thousands of people entering Croatia, quickly overwhelming authorities who then started bussing them to the Hungarian border.
The new Hungarian figures came after European Union leaders on Wednesday agreed to boost aid for Syria's neighbours, including one billion dollars through UN agencies.
