Backgrounder: China, U.S. science & technology ties

English.news.cn   2015-09-23 21:51:14

BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- China and the U.S. have been cooperating in sectors of science and technology for 36 years under the US-China Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement signed in 1979. Since September last year, the agreement facilitated 30 agency-to-agency protocols, and more than 40 active sub-agreements in fields including agriculture, energy and environmental protection.

China and the U.S. have become each other's main partner in scientific cooperation. China's long-term policies to boost innovative capabilities, plus the newly introduced mass innovation scheme reinforce this trend. The global expansion of Chinese companies is expected to add dynamic new elements to bilateral S&T relations.

The report released by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission indicated that the two countries' S&T relationship has become a complex, multifaceted kind of engagement, especially when China brings new capabilities and new wealth. 21st century realities offer new challenges and opportunities for both countries in science and technology cooperation.
