BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- China has issued a white paper on gender equality and women's development. It paints a general picture of women's life in the country and provides a comprehensive overview of women policies during the past 20 years.
Over the past two decades, the Chiense government has made greater efforts to push forward the cause of gender equality and women's development. The white paper summarizes the experience and achievements in eight aspects. These include improving a national mechanism to promote women's status, safeguarding women's rights in economic development, guaranteeing equal opportunity for women to receive education, and improving a legal system to protect women's rights and interests.
Official statistics show that the poverty rate of the female population decreased from 20.3 percent in 2005 to 9.8 percent in 2010. And the average life expectancy of Chinese women grew to 77.4 years in 2010, an increase of 4.1 years over 2000. Women are also playing a bigger role in participating in decision making.
"There's a higher ratio of women participating in decision making and management. The ratio of women deputies in the first session of the 12th National People's Congress in 2013 was 23.4 percent, 2.4 percentage points higher than 20 years ago. In 2013, the proportion of women in village committees was 22.7 percent, 7 percentage points higher than 2000," Song Xiuyan, vice-chairperson of National Working Committee On Children & Women, said.
