Greeks to vote in cliffhanger poll

English.news.cn   2015-09-21 09:30:17

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Nearly 10 million voters are being asked to go to the polls on Sunday to elect a government which is already bound by economic reforms set out in a three-year EU bailout.

Exit polls will be released when ballots close at 16:00 GMT, and first official estimates will be delivered by the interior ministry after 18:00 GMT. Alexis Tsipras resigned as prime minister last month, but called the election after agreeing to a bailout package with Greece's creditors. His Syriza party is in a tight race with the conservative New Democracy party of Vangelis Meimarakis.

Opinion polls suggest Tsipras may have the edge, but only just. Neither party is expected to get the roughly 38 percent of the vote generally seen as the required tally for a clear majority in the 300-seat parliament. That means whoever gets the most votes will need to form a coalition.
