Worldwide criticism of controversial bills

English.news.cn   2015-09-20 12:16:42

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Japan's passage of the controversial security bills proposed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has triggered worldwide criticism. South Korea's ruling Saenuri Party voiced great concern about a possible "resurrection of militarism" that Japan previously implemented in Northeast Asia.

South Korea's main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy expressed a strong censure of the Abe cabinet for abandoning the country's pacifist constitution and seeking a way to gain military power. Seoul's foreign ministry urged Japan to contribute to regional peace and stability when deciding and implementing its security and defense policies.

A group of Cambodian scholars say the enactment of the security bills is tantamount to diplomatic suicide for Japan, adding that the bills will complicate the already complex regional security climate.

And Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao newspaper said the forceful passage of the bills would lead to punishment for Japan's ruling party in the upcoming House of Councillors election. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation called the change an important step in Abe's efforts to lift the constitutional restrictions on the Japanese military.
