BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Wildfires have ripped through northern California in the United States, destroyed hundreds of buildings. State governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in areas ravaged by the blaze.
The fast spreading flames have consumed more than 16-thousand hectares of land since erupting Saturday afternoon in rural Lake County.
The towns of Middletown and Cobb were the hardest hit. The fires were further fanned by the hot weather and drought.
Officials expanded mandatory evacuations as shifting winds sent flames toward a number of towns in the hills north of Napa Valley wine country.
Thousands of residents were forced to leave their homes. Four firefighters were hospitalized with second-degree burns.
